We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.
Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1823, and we understand it is still open.

The return to the Religious Census of 1851 (HO 129/330/5/3/10) for a Wesleyan Chapel in Shirehampton describes a separate building, erected in 1823, used exclusively as a place of worship. It had seating for 85, all of which was free, and the average attendance at evening services was 60. The return was completed by Robert Edbrooke, its Manager, who lived in "Shirehampton near Bristol". There is no mention of a Sunday School, but Old Maps show one existed by 1904.
Today's Church is a far cry from the original chapel, though it is not known when it replaced the earlier building. It is an elegant stone-built "Gothic" building, having 2 tiers of round-arched windows in the front facing the High Street, and a 3-bay front. The centre bay extends upwards past the roof, and is topped by a pediment, and it has a large rose window, with 10 'petals'. As can be seen, the entrance is in the side of the building, from Penpole Avenue.

Now or formerly Wesleyan Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
