Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

We don't know when this Place of Worship was founded, but we understand it is still open.

This building is atypical of the more usual Kingdom Hall. It is a long rectangular building of mixed brick and stone, with sides of 5 bays, and a front entrance, on either side of which are two tall round-arched windows. It is sited on the side of an embankment of the Clifton Extension railway line, which permits a second story, below ground level. The outline of the building, with its distinctive porch, is shown on Old Maps from 1883, apparently a meeting place for a congregation of Christian Brethren, which in Kelly's Directory of Bristol of 1914 is recorded as "Brethren Gospel Preaching Rm.", between #62, John B. Skinner, and #66 Hampton Road, Miss Annie Mitchell, a costumier.
However, a notice in the London Gazette of 11th April 1902 (p.243) records "Hampton Road Assembly Room" at #66; and "Kingdom Hall" is listed in Places recorded by the Registrar General under the provisions of the Places of Worship Registration Act 1855 (2010) at #64 Hampton Road, so I have concluded the two buildings were distinct, at least by the 1900s.

Search Tips:

You can specify either a Place, or OS Grid Reference to search for. When you specify a Place, only entries for that place will be returned, with Places of Worship listed in alphabetical order. If you specify a Grid Reference, Places of Worship in the immediate vicinity will be listed, in order of distance from the Grid Reference supplied. 'Multi-denominational' includes Ecumenical Partnerships, and 'Miscellaneous' means anything not covered by other broad classes.
