We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1998, and we understand it is still open.

In May 2014 when I first prepared this account, I observed that the Centre was located on the floors above 2 retail premises in a group of 6, two doors down from "The Foresters" public house. One was a betting shop, the other was a fast food outlet. The doorway to the betting shop had the legend "I.Z.A.U.K / Bristol / Zen", indicating it was also the headquarters for the International Zen Association in the United Kingdom.

Now, on a Google StreetView capture of July 2018, I have observed two changes. The first is that "The Foresters" has been renamed as the "Gloucester Road Alehouse and Kitchen", and the Betting Shop is now a Chinese restaurant. But it does still have ZEN on its doorway, and the above website indicates it is still the headquarters of Bristol Zen!

Bristol Zen Dojo (1998) Ltd is a limited company, also a Charity. Whilst I have no documentary evidence to support this, it seems likely that 91-92 Gloucester Road was not their first meeting place. An article Bristol's Lord Mayor honours selfless community people with medals published in the Bristol Post on 12th May 2010 records an award to Robert Flowers, who had been a karate coach since 1977. It recorded that he bought the Vaughan Mission Rooms in Clifton in 1985, and converted them into the first Zen Centre in Bristol. At the time of preparing this account originally (2014), however, I could see no evidence of the Vaughan Mission Rooms still being a place of Buddhist meeting, and in any case it seems unlikely two Zen Centres in Bristol would co-exist. Therefore, my conclusion is that all meetings now take place at the Gloucester Road premises, "home" to the Centre since 1998 (or earlier), coincident with the formation of the Limited Company.

On the other hand, I might be quite wrong! Apologies to all concerned if so.

Now or formerly Zen Buddhist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Bishopston, Bristol, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
