Cemeteries We believe the Chapel did NOT have a graveyard. Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all. Church History This Place of Worship was founded before 1885, but we understand it was closed before 1902. The location of Zoar Chapel can be seen on Bristol Town Plans of 1885 on the south side of Unity Street, half way between its junctions with Thomas Street (now New Thomas Street) and Lucky Lane. It was rectangular, extending as far back as George Street (later named New George Street), and had seating for 200. It is possible the Chapel had only a limited life, as by Kelly's Directory of Bristol of 1902, the Salvation Army were resident in Unity Street, and the street directory portion indicates their Hall in the same relative position as was Zoar Chapel; but even they didn't stay very long, as by 1914, there is no mention of any Chapel, and the street would appear to be wholly residential. The area, including Lucky Lane, and New George Street, has now been cleared, and is occupied by a car park. Denomination Now or formerly Particular Baptist. If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication. • You can specify a Street address, and likewise 'George' will return George Place, St George's Street, George and Dragon, &c.
• You can restrict the search to classes of Denomination. The exact denomination is always shown in the results, although the search is for broad types. Thus you can search for 'Methodist', but not 'Wesleyan Methodist' or 'Primitive Methodist'. 'Multi-denominational' includes Ecumenical Partnerships, and 'Miscellaneous' means anything not covered by other broad classes.
