Cemeteries

We believe the Chapel did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded before 1874, but we understand it was closed before 1884.

I discovered this Chapel recorded on the Ashmead Map of Bristol of 1874, whilst looking for something else. Unfortunately, however this appears to be its only appearance, so I have been unable to establish what kind of Chapel it was.

St Thomas Street, in the City, was named originally Thomas Street, presumably for the presence of the ancient building of St Thomas's Church. The Chapel is shown on the west side, 2 doors up from its junction with (on the west side) Three Queen's Lane, and (on the east side) Mitchell Street. Two public houses - The Three Queens, on the north-west corner of the aforesaid junction, and the Ring of Bells on the south-east corner - were nearby. Seemingly Thomas Street may once have been a busy thoroughfare, with a market, but in the present day, it seems to be largely devoted to offices and warehouses.

Denomination

Now or formerly Mission Hall.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
