Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded before 1970, and we understand it is still open.

Southmead's Latter-day Saints meeting house is one four places of worship situated in the area of Southmead between Wigton Crescent and Glencoyne Square. Its given address, as given on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints website is Wigton Crescent, but it is not easily visible from there. The front, to which there is pedestrian access only, can best be seen from Glencoyne Square. It is built of brick, with an attractive diamond pattern in white, set into the centre of the gable, and there is a slender metal tower at its south-east corner. Vehicular access is from Lanercost Road.
Although it is not recorded explicitly as LDS, the following notice in The London Gazette of 7th April 1970 (p.3898) probably records its registration for marriages:
A building certified for worship named SOUTHMEAD CHAPEL, Wigton Crescent, Southmead in the registration district of Bristol in the county borough of Bristol, was on 20th March 1970, registered for solemnising marriages therein pursuant to section 41 of the Marriage Act 1949, as amended by section 1(1) of the Marriage Acts Amendment Act 1958. Dated 31st March 197.
Other LDS Meeting Houses in Bristol are at 721 Wells Road (BS14 9HU), and Downend Road (BS16 5EF). The Wells Road premises is the only one of the three which is also a Family History Centre.

Search Tips:

You can specify either a Place, or OS Grid Reference to search for. When you specify a Place, only entries for that place will be returned, with Places of Worship listed in alphabetical order. If you specify a Grid Reference, Places of Worship in the immediate vicinity will be listed, in order of distance from the Grid Reference supplied. 'Multi-denominational' includes Ecumenical Partnerships, and 'Miscellaneous' means anything not covered by other broad classes.
