We believe the Chapel does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded by 1920, and we understand it is still open.

Southmead Hospital was erected on the site of Barton Regis Workhouse, which according to Kelly's Directory of Bristol of 1902 dates from 1902, as it was then said to be in course of erection. By Kelly's Directory of 1914, it was recorded as "Southmead Workhouse, Bristol Union". Daniel Joseph Price was the officer in charge, and Mrs. D.J. Price (presumably his wife) was matron. A clerk, J.J. Simpson, was mentioned, but no chaplain; however a place of Anglican worship, Southmead Mission Church, was nearby, the next but one entry in Southmead Road, so perhaps it functioned as the hospital chapel. The building between the two was recorded as Grove House, a beer retailer's.

The outline of a building which is now the hospital's Chapel is shown on Maps as early as 1935-36, but it is not labelled as "Chapel" until 1951-1952. A Chaplaincy was nevertheless in existence before then, as the Bristol Record Office hold records of baptisms from at least 30 years earlier, 1920-1993.

Now or formerly Hospital Chapel.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Chapel is located at OS grid reference ST5892477711. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:
