Church History

This Cemetery or Burial Ground was founded by 1874, though it is now closed, but we don't yet know when.

St John's Cemetery first came to my attention on Old Maps, on the north-east side of St John's Lane, the earliest being Ashmead's Maps of Bristol of 1874. I assume from the name it was associated with St John the Baptist's Church. In the present day, it is surrounded by trees, and so not readily visible from the road; however from above, it looks as though it has been cleared, and laid out as a park, so I have assumed it has been closed.

Note: it is sometimes referred to as "St John's Burial Ground" - probably to distinguish it from the graveyard surrounding the former Church, which likewise is now a public park.

Denomination

Now or formerly a Cemetery.

In most cases this will be a record of its original consecration.

Please choose a County by selecting one of the Tabs below.
Note: you MUST choose a County - searching all four at once is not an option!

You can specify either a Place, or OS Grid Reference to search for. When you specify a Place, only entries for that place will be returned, with Places of Worship listed in alphabetical order. You can further refine your search by supplying other search terms.

Please note the above provides a search of selected fields in the Gloucestershire section of the Places of Worship Database on this site (churchdb.gukutils.org.uk) only. For other counties, or for a full search of the Database, you might like to try the site's Google Custom Search, which includes full webpage content.
