This Church had a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1859, but we understand it was closed after 1949.

This Chapel first came to my attention on Phil Draper's ChurchCrawler website, in which he says it was built in 1858-9 for the Convent which occupied Arno's Court. The Chapel stood in front of the Convent, adjacent to the road, and can be seen on Old Maps from the 1880s, and as recent as 1949. Old Maps of the 1900s show a School has been added at the rear, and also a small Burial Ground to the south, again adjacent to the road.

Kelly's Directory of Bristol of 1902 records it as "Convent of the Good Shepherd, Arno's Court Reformatory for Girls & Refuge for Penitents", with chaplain Rev. A. O'Sullivan, and lady superioress Miss Agnes Ramage.

In the present day, the Convent has been converted into a hotel, named "Arnos Manor", but the front and side wall of the chapel have been preserved, and incorporated into the restaurant attached to the hotel, called "Cloisters". Meanwhile, the Burial Ground appears to have been cleared, and its site is now part of the larger landscaped area which constitutes the hotel grounds.

Now or formerly Roman Catholic (Convent).

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Arnos Vale, Bristol, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
