Cemeteries

We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1905, but we understand it was closed by 1986.

This area of Painswick Road, north and south of its junction with Matson Lane, was the focus of much development in the 19th century, mainly on the west side of Painswick Road. A school was in existence by 1875, and in 1884, the Misses Rice built a new schoolhouse in memory of their sisters Harriet and Caroline. Its location can be seen on Old Maps, just north of the Matson Lane junction. By 1956 it is labelled as "Matson Infants School".

The Victoria County History series: A History of the County of Gloucester, Volume 4: The City of Gloucester (1988), pp.438-448 (Matson) provides the information that the Church Room (or Hall) was built in 1905, in associated with St Katharine's Church. It is shown on Old Maps to have been built in front of the school, which perhaps typically, was set back from the road. The site was further expanded in 1953 by the addition of some huts, but falling attendance at the school led to its closure in 1960, and by 1986, only the former school remained standing. The area has since been redeveloped for housing.

Interestingly, Old Maps of the 1880s show the land behind the school was the site of a former Church. This was not, obviously, Matson parish Church, so its provenance is at present a mystery.

Denomination

Now or formerly Church of England.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
