Cemeteries

We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded after 1800, though it is now closed, but we don't yet know when.

The return to the Religious Census of 1851 (HO 129/336/4/14/16) describes a meeting place in Elmore for an Independent congregation, which was part of another building, and not used exclusively as a place of worship. It has not been possible to locate a property labelled specifically as a Chapel on Old Maps, but those of 1884 and onwards do show a building named "Chapel House", which seems a likely candidate to have been used as such. There was seating for 50, all free, and the estimated congregation on March 30th was 22 to an afternoon service. The return was completed by "Wm. Peters Cordwinder", its Superintendent, of "Elmore near Gloucester, Gloucestershire". The 1851 Census suggests this was William Peters, who was a Cordwainer, rather than as it appears on the form, a gentleman with a double-barreled surname! Perhaps "Chapel House" was his home, but as the house he occupies is unnamed, it has not been possible to tell.

Evidently, the congregation was too small to justify the building of a dedicated chapel, as (to my knowledge) there is no mention of one after this date. William was still in Elmore in 1861, but by 1871, he had moved to Quedgeley. He was born c.1807 in Tirley, and was married to a lady named Ann, born in Newland.

Denomination

Now or formerly Independent.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
