This Church has (or had) a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in the 12th century, and we understand it is still open.

According to The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868) the parish of St Mary the Virgin Shipton Sollars was united with Shipton Oliffe by Act of Parliament in 1776. The two churches appear nevertheless to have kept separate registers, apart from the period 1785-1800, where baptisms and burials are in a combined register; however these are all kept under the one Gloucestershire Archives reference: P290.

The church has an unusual 13th century bellcote, with two chambers, and having a pinnacle on either side of its conical capping - more details of this, and the church's other architectural features are available on the British Listed Buildings website.

In Medieval times, St Oswald belonged to the Abbey of St Peter in Gloucester - for this, and further details of its history, see "St Oswald's Church, Shipton Oliffe" on the website of the Coln River Group of parishes.

Now or formerly Church of England.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Church is located at OS grid reference SP0370218539. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:
