We don't know whether this Church had a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

We don't know when this Place of Worship was founded, but we understand it was closed in 1778.

Once upon a time, Siddington had two churches. The settlements, sometimes known as Siddington St Mary (or Upper Siddington) and Siddington St Peter (Lower Siddington), were united by an Inclosure Act of 1778; St Mary's Church was subsequently demolished, and the parish of Siddington has been united with Preston since 1928.

The site where St Mary's stood is still marked on the more detailed Maps. It was adjacent to the property known as The Old Rectory. Disappointingly, perhaps, the Rectory was not concurrent with the Church, as according to the British Listed Buildings website, it was built in the 19th century. The site does not mention St Mary's, so I presume there are no surviving remains of the church. Parish records do however exist, and the Gloucestershire Archives hold 3 registers, covering the period 1606-1779.

Interestingly, the closure of St Mary's is concurrent with the opening of the Thames & Severn canal in 1789. Had the Church survived, a branch of the Canal, from Siddington to Cirencester, would have passed by the graveyard. Whilst most of the canal is now filled in, recent maps show a short stretch adjacent to the former site which is still "open". Now or formerly Church of England.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Church was located at OS grid reference SP0293700134. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Siddington, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
