Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 681, and we understand it is still open.

St Mary the Virgin's Church is a Grade I Listed Building - see the British Listed Buildings website for details.
Surprisingly the present building is not that old, built in 1781 by Francis Hiorn of Warwick, but it replaced a much earlier building. The church's own website says there has been a place of Christian worship since at least 681AD, and the spire survives from the medieval building which predated Hiorn's design.
It was a difficult church to photograph as it is a very large church on a relatively small plot, and with plenty of trees shielding the edges of the site. And where they weren't, the position of the sun precluded photographing.
Inside is very special. The box pews and gallery are worthy of note, also the slenderest of pillars holding up the roof. However, not only are they very slender, they are also made out of wood!!!

Search Tips:

You can specify either a Place, or OS Grid Reference to search for. When you specify a Place, only entries for that place will be returned, with Places of Worship listed in alphabetical order. If you specify a Grid Reference, Places of Worship in the immediate vicinity will be listed, in order of distance from the Grid Reference supplied.
