Cemeteries

This Church has (or had) a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1833, and we understand it is still open.

Non-Conformist Chapels and Meeting Houses, Gloucestershire (1986) records the chapel as built 1835, and "altered and refenestrated" in 1874; however the Religious Census of 1851 (HO 129/334/1/1/3) records it as built 2 years earlier, in 1833. It is described on the return as "Baptist in the practice of open communion", a "separate and entire" building, and with the school adjoining, used exclusively as a place of worship. There were 72 free sittings, 214 "other" sittings, and no standing room. The average number of worshippers was 170 to both morning and evening service, with 80 Sunday Scholars in the mornings. The dimensions of the chapel were given as 48 by 32 feet; whilst the School Room adjoining was 32 by 21 feet. The return was completed by William Copley, the Minister, and he added the additional remark that the dimensions of the chapel were 48 by 32 feet, and those of the School Room adjoining 32 by 21 feet.

It is listed in Places recorded by the Registrar General under the provisions of the Places of Worship Registration Act 1855 (2010) as "Blakeney Baptist Chapel".

Denomination

Now or formerly Baptist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

Please choose a County by selecting one of the Tabs below.
Note: you MUST choose a County - searching all four at once is not an option!

You can specify either a Place, or OS Grid Reference to search for. When you specify a Place, only entries for that place will be returned, with Places of Worship listed in alphabetical order. If you specify a Grid Reference, Places of Worship in the immediate vicinity will be listed, in order of distance from the Grid Reference supplied. The default is to list 10, but you can specify How Many you want to see, up to a maximum of 100.

You can further refine your search by supplying other search terms.

Please note the above provides a search of selected fields in the Gloucestershire section of the Places of Worship Database on this site (churchdb.gukutils.org.uk) only. For other counties, or for a full search of the Database, you might like to try the site's Google Custom Search, which includes full webpage content.
