We believe the Chapel did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded after 1968, but we understand it was closed by 1991.

This location is marked with '+' on my Cheltenham Street Atlas (pre-1996), and on Old Maps, noted for the first time on a 1968-87 series labelled as "Chapel (Private)". It is at the rear of a property labelled Greville [sic] House, so it seems probable it was a chapel associated with the House.

In the present day (2018), Grevill House is an Older People's Care facility, and also provides accomodation for Ashley Intermediate Care Centre - a "halfway-house" for those discharged from hospital, but not quite ready to go home. The property belongs to the Orders of St John Care Trust, a not-for-profit charitable trust, established in 1991. Information on an NHS website indicates it has no place of worship or visiting clergy, so I assume the Chapel would have closed when the building was sold to the Trust.

It does not appear to have been one of Charlton Kings' old building s- in fact the 1880s Map series available on the Gloucestershire "Know Your Place" website shows its plot occupied by a Tennis Court!

Now or formerly Private Chapel.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Chapel was located at OS grid reference SO9697520524. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Charlton Kings, Cheltenham, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
