Cemeteries This Church had a graveyard. Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all. Church History This Place of Worship was founded in 1740, but we understand it was closed in 1873. This former meeting house of a Baptist congregation was built about 1740. It is at the south east (lower) end of a burial ground, shared with its replacement ('The Tabernacle') built in 1873. The original building was enlarged at the front in about 1810, and at a later date, a long Sunday-school wing was attached to the north west. The Sunday-school wing has a similar 3-bay front to the chapel, and they share a hipped roof. The front of the Sunday-school had an oval tablet inscribed 'Chalford Tabernacle Sunday School Room'. There is a memorial in front of the chapel to Rev. James DEANE, 50 years pastor (1810), and his wife Elizabeth (1840), and there is a headstone to Daniel M... minister, ?1760 at the rear. Surprisingly this building doesn't appear to be Listed, though the present Baptist Chapel building is. If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication. 'Multi-denominational' includes Ecumenical Partnerships, and 'Miscellaneous' means anything not covered by other broad classes.
