Cemeteries

This Church had a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1740, but we understand it was closed in 1873.

This former meeting house of a Baptist congregation was built about 1740. It is at the south east (lower) end of a burial ground, shared with its replacement ('The Tabernacle') built in 1873.

The original building was enlarged at the front in about 1810, and at a later date, a long Sunday-school wing was attached to the north west. The Sunday-school wing has a similar 3-bay front to the chapel, and they share a hipped roof. The front of the Sunday-school had an oval tablet inscribed 'Chalford Tabernacle Sunday School Room'.

There is a memorial in front of the chapel to Rev. James DEANE, 50 years pastor (1810), and his wife Elizabeth (1840), and there is a headstone to Daniel M... minister, ?1760 at the rear.

Surprisingly this building doesn't appear to be Listed, though the present Baptist Chapel building is. [Source: Non-Conformist Chapels and Meeting Houses, Gloucestershire (1986)]

Denomination

Now or formerly Baptist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
