Cemeteries

We believe the Chapel did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in the 14th century, but we understand it was closed before 1538.

According to the Victoria County History series: A History of the County of Gloucester, Volume 11: Bisley and Longtree Hundreds (1976), pp.215-216 (Nailsworth - Churches) "there seems little reason to doubt the 18th-century tradition that a chapel of ease to Avening anciently existed at Nailsworth or that it was the surviving building at Bannut Tree House." The VCH account then goes on to explain that this chapel may have gone out of use before the Reformation, leaving Nailsworth without a place of worship for the established church until in 1794, when "at the instigation of several prominent inhabitants, led by Jeremiah Day, an episcopal chapel was built by subscription."

Day's chapel remained unconsecrated because (it is suggested) it had uncertain foundations, and an uncertain income, till in 1900 it was pulled down, and replaced by the present St George's Church. Conversely, Bannut Chapel is now Grade II Listed. The British Listed Buildings website account indicates that at the time Day's chapel was being built (late 18th century), it was a stable. Then in the 19th century it became a dwelling house. It is of one and a half storeys, with various more recent additions, but with 14th century tracery, said to have come from Horsley church.

Denomination

Now or formerly Roman Catholic.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
