Church History

This Place of Worship was founded about 1100, and we understand it is still open.

Pevsner tells us the earliest part of the church is the nave. For evidence of its antiquity, he cites the south doorway, "with its still Transitional moulding"; and a "long 13th century lancet" to demonstrate the nave came before the W[est] tower. More exact dates are suggested in an account of St Peter's history on A Church Near You website, of about 1100 for the nave, and 1250 for the tower.
The broach spire was added by George Kempson in 1874, when the nave was also rebuilt, "the lancet arrangement being inspired by Acton Burnell" [Shropshire]. Both Pevsner, and Mike Salter, in his booklet The Old Parish Churches of Herefordshire (1998) mention the rood beam, with two carved friezes of foliage, and the chancel roof, which has collars on arched braces, and a trefoiled opening above.
The church is situated on the north east corner of the junction of Church Road with the A49 Hereford to Leominster road.
