Cemeteries

This Church had a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1295, though it is now closed, but we don't yet know when.

The present village of Honeybourne is an amalgamation of two ancient parishes, named Church Honeybourne (in Worcestershire) and Cow Honeybourne, in Gloucestershire. They were divided by the Roman Road of Ryknild Street, now a minor road. By the mid 19th century, however the Church in Cow Honeybourne had become disused, as inhabitants of the parish were attending St Ecgwin's in Church Honeybourne. It received a brief reprieve in 1871, when it was "restored for Divine service", but by the time Kelly's Directory of 1923 was published, Cow Honeybourne's inhabitants were once again attending the Church in "Honeybourne", which by then appeared to have dropped its prefix.

In 1931, Cow Honeybourne parish was transferred from Gloucestershire to Worcestershire, and in 1953, the two Honeybournes were amalgamated. Today, though it retains its tower, the Old Church of Cow Honeybourne has been converted into a pair of cottages, and St Ecgwin, in Church Honeybourne has been closed. Both are nevertheless Listed Buildings, St Ecgwin is Grade I Listed, and the Old Church is Grade II - see the British Listed Buildings website for details.

Denomination

Now or formerly Church of England.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
