Cemeteries

We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded about 1944, but we understand it was closed after 2002.

Derbyshire Record Office's Non-Conformist Register Guide includes records of baptisms 1944-2001, and marriages 1973-2002 for a Primitive Methodist Chapel here. Old Maps show that Coton in the Elms also had a Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, in Chapel Street, but the two do not appear to have been concurrent. The latter is now the Village Hall, so perhaps this building, in Main Street, was its replacement.

It is of red brick, with sides of four bays having rectangular windows. The front is spectacular, having a large semi-circular window above a central bay, and bands of contrasting stonework just above ground level, and just below the apex.

It is now in private ownership, named "Chapel House", but retains its "chapel" appearance.

Denomination

Now or formerly Primitive Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
