Cemeteries

We don't know whether this Church had a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded before 1140, but we understand it was closed in 1536.

Derby City Council's e-planning document An Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment of Land Fronting Bold Lane and St Mary's Gate, Derby mentions St James's Church, with Easting and Northing given as 3517 and 3624: "St James', which was originally a church, was given to the Cluniac monastery of Bermondsey some time before 1140. It is thought that the church then became a priory cell until the reformation, when it was dissolved in 1536."

Denomination

Now or formerly Cluniac.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
