Cemeteries

We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded by 1981, and we understand it is still open.

Baslow Methodist Church occupies premises which a plaque above the door says were built in 1822 as a Wesleyan Methodist Sunday School. It is described in Non-Conformist Chapels and Meeting Houses, Derbyshire (1986) as having a "domestic front of three bays with external staircase at south end to upper room". The original Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, which according to the aforesaid publication, opened in 1844, is further down the road, about 60 yards to the north. It was "the present chapel" at the time of the study, since the transfer to the Sunday School premises took place after the "watershed" for the study which formed the basis of the publication (1974).

The following notice in The London Gazette of 2nd July 1981 (p.8864) would have reflected the transfer:

A Building certified for worship named BASLOW METHODIST CHURCH, School Lane, Baslow, in the registration district of Bakewell in the Non-Metropolitan County of Derbyshire, was on 26th June 1981 registered for solemnising marriages therein pursuant to section 41 of the Marriage Act 1949, as amended by section 1(1) of the Marriage Acts Amendment Act 1958, in place of a building of the same address now disused. Dated 29th June 1981.

Denomination

Now or formerly Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
