This Church has (or had) a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in the 12th century, and we understand it is still open.

The following information about the Church has been provided to accompany the photographs on the right. A list of people who have supplied the information is included in the Acknowledgements, below.

[Image 1] This is a spectacular view, if I say so myself, indeed may go so far as to label it “chocolate box”. The brilliant pink-flowering valerian flourishes in the poor soil on the tops of these walls, and has even rooted in the verge opposite the church, but so far I have been unable to encourage any to grow in my own garden![1]

[Image 2] There are only 2 Memorials inside the Church, a stained glass window commissioned by Bertha Webb in memory of two of her uncles, and a WWI Memorial.

Thus it gave me an impression of being a “new” church, but in fact this is not so. According to Mike Salter's Old Parish Churches of Worcestershire, the nave north wall and doorway are Norman, and the chancel 14th century, with the remainder of the church 14-15th century.

For example, the south aisle, and arcade, which can be seen to the right of this photograph were added in the 15th century.[1]

[Image 3] According to Mike Salter's Old Parish Churches of Worcestershire, the west tower dates from the 14th century, although this still looks like new stonework to me![1]

Now or formerly Church of England.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Church is located at OS grid reference SO7938234277. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Berrow, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.

Search for other Places of Worship in Worcestershire

Search Tips:

You can specify either a Place, or OS Grid Reference to search for. When you specify a Place, only entries for that place will be returned, with Places of Worship listed in alphabetical order. If you specify a Grid Reference, Places of Worship in the immediate vicinity will be listed, in order of distance from the Grid Reference supplied. The default is to list 10, but you can specify How Many you want to see, up to a maximum of 100.

You can further refine your search by supplying other search terms.

Please note the above provides a search of selected fields in the Worcestershire section of the Places of Worship Database on this site (churchdb.gukutils.org.uk) only. For other counties, or for a full search of the Database, you might like to try the site's Google Custom Search, which includes full webpage content.
