Cemeteries

We believe the Chapel did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded after 1877, but we understand it was closed before 1938.

This Chapel appears to have had only a limited life. Kelly's Directories from 1891 record a Methodist New Connexion Chapel at Stretton Hillside, which I assume refers to this one, which is on the outskirts of Stretton, and marked as "Methodist New Connexion" on OS Maps of 1899. By 1917-1918, it is labelled as "United Methodist". So far as it is possible to tell from Old Maps, it was built in the north west corner of a field, almost opposite the junction of the A61 with the B6014; but by 1938 it appears to have been demolished, and its site reverted to farm land. Possibly it would have served the workers at Stretton Colliery, seemingly abandoned by 1900.

Stretton derives its name from the Roman Road, Ryknild Street, passing through it, now followed for part of its way by the A61.

Denomination

Now or formerly New Connexion/United Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
