Cemeteries We believe the Chapel did NOT have a graveyard. Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all. Church History This Place of Worship was founded in 1841, though it is now closed, but we don't yet know when. This chapel is a pretty little building, now in private occupation, but it still retains the sign "Woolley Methodist Chapel" on the side of the building facing the road. The return to the Religious Census of 1851 (HO 129/448/1/6/27) for "Woolley Chapel", parish of Brackenfield, erected in 1841 as a separate building, which was not used exclusively as a place of worship. There was free seating for 200, and an average congregation of 14 to morning service and 70 in the afternoon, with 30 Sunday Scholars in both a morning and afternoon. The return was completed by Edward Barker, its Manager, who lived at "Woolley nr. Alfreton, Derbyshire". There was no explanation as to what else the building was used for. Non-Conformist Chapels and Meeting Houses, Derbyshire (1986) records a tablet above the south entrance with a date of 1841, and initials "JW", but this is not visible from the road. Denomination Now or formerly Primitive Methodist. If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication. • You can specify a Street address, and likewise 'George' will return George Place, St George's Street, George and Dragon, &c.
• You can restrict the search to classes of Denomination. The exact denomination is always shown in the results, although the search is for broad types. Thus you can search for 'Methodist', but not 'Wesleyan Methodist' or 'Primitive Methodist'. 'Multi-denominational' includes Ecumenical Partnerships, and 'Miscellaneous' means anything not covered by other broad classes.
