Swadlincote, Derbyshire.

We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded before 1947, but we understand it was closed in 1989, and the premises are now in secular use.

This Church was founded prior to 13th December 1947, as a notice appeared in The London Gazette of 19th December 1947 (p.6042) that "PROVIDENCE BAPTIST CHURCH, situated at 62, Alexandra Road, Swadlincote" was registered for solemnizing marriages on that date. A comparable notice appeared on 16th February 1989 (p.2020) regarding its closure:

The Registrar General, being satisfied that PROVIDENCE BAPTIST CHURCH, 62 Alexandra Road, Swadlincote and, ELIM CHURCH, Swadlincote Road, Woodville, in the registration district of Swadlincote in the Non-Metropolitan County of Derbyshire are no longer used as places of worship by the congregations on whose behalf they were registered for marriages in accordance with the Marriage Acts, 1938 or Marriage Acts, 1949 (as amended) has cancelled the registration. Dated 31st January 1989.

The Church appears to have been built as part of a terrace, and whilst its style is unique, it seems probable it was a conversion of what was originally a private house. The premises have every appearance now of being in commercial use.

Now or formerly Baptist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Church was located at OS grid reference SK2984719336. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Swadlincote, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
