We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded before 1900, and we understand it is still open.

The present Church Gresley Methodist Church is a (relatively) new building, but Old Maps show it was built on, or close to the site of a former Wesleyan Methodist Church. The closure of the latter was recorded by following notice in The London Gazette of 3rd July 1969 (p.6917):

The Registrar General, being satisfied that METHODIST CHURCH, York Road, Church Gresley in the registration district of Repton in the county of Derby, is no longer used as a place of worship by the congregation on whose behalf it was on 1st May 1900, registered for marriages in accordance with the Marriage Act, 1836, has cancelled the registration. Dated 23rd June 1969.

A similar notice appeared on 11th June 1971 (p.6265) relating to "CHURCH GRESLEY METHODIST CHURCH, York Road, Church Gresley", being registered for the solemnising of marriages, dated 7th June 1971, which I assume relates to the opening of the new building.

The original chapel had a Sunday School attached. Its closure - as "METHODIST SUNDAY SCHOOL, York Road, Church Gresley" was recorded separately in the Gazette on 16th February 1989 (p.2020).

See the South Derbyshire Methodist Circuit (SDMC-onthenet) - the "Voice of the Methodist Church in South Derbyshire" - for current information.

Now or formerly Wesleyan Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Church is located at OS grid reference SK2964318735. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Church Gresley, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
