We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1867, but we understand it was closed in 1971.

Kelly's Directory of 1895 mentions a Free Methodist Chapel in "Sleet Moor Lane", built in 1867. It is shown on Old Maps of 1880 as such; however by Kelly's Directory of 1912, it had become United Methodist.

Derbyshire Record Office's Non-Conformist Register Guide records it as "Salem Methodist Church", for which registers of baptisms 1868-1970, and marriages 1955-1967 exist. They also note it closed in 1971.

The latter date is confirmed by the following notice published in The London Gazette of 18th May 1971 (p.5178):

The Registrar General, being satisfied that SALEM METHODIST CHURCH, Sleetmoor Lane, Somercotes, Alfreton, in the registration district of Belper, in the County of Derby, is no longer used as a place of worship by the congregation on whose behalf it was on 5th April 1871, registered for marriages in accordance with the Marriage Act, 1836, has cancelled the registration. Dated 10th May 1971.

It was a fairly large rectangular building, on the north-west corner of the junction of the former Coupland Place and Sleetmoor Lane, and had a Sunday School to the rear. It is shown best on OS Maps of 1952-1962. In the present day, it has been demolished, and new housing, and a new road (Warwick Road), now occupy the site it was on. Now or formerly Free/United Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Church was located at OS grid reference SK4207453903. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Somercotes, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
