Cemeteries

We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1961, but we understand it was closed by 1992.

Hackenthorpe's first Methodist Chapel, which is believed to have opened by 1863, was situated on the west side of Main Street, a short distance north of, and opposite Hackenthorpe Hall. The congregation transferred to a new building in Spa View Road in, or about 1961, as the following notice in The London Gazette of 12th September 1961 (p.6638) indicates:

A Building certified for worship named HACKENTHORPE METHODIST CHURCH, Spa View Road, Hackenthorpe, in the registration district of Chesterfield, in the county of Derby, was on 5th September 1961, registered for solemnising marriages therein pursuant to section 41 of the Marriage Act, 1949, as amended by section 1(1) of the Marriage Acts Amendment Act, 1958. Dated 8th September 1961.

A notice, announcing the cancellation of the registration of the Main Street premises was published the same day.

The catalogue of Nonconformist Registers at Sheffield Archives includes baptisms for the combined buildings for the periods 1863-1939, and 1939-1992; and marriages 1963-1970 and 1970-1991. A corresponding notice of the closure of the Spa View Road premises for Methodist worship was published in the Gazette of 3rd July 1992 (p.11292), since which time the building has been adopted as Rother Valley Community Church.

Denomination

Now or formerly Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Hackenthorpe, Beighton, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.

Please choose a County by selecting one of the Tabs below.
Note: you MUST choose a County - searching all four at once is not an option!

You can specify either a Place, or OS Grid Reference to search for. When you specify a Place, only entries for that place will be returned, with Places of Worship listed in alphabetical order. You can further refine your search by supplying other search terms.

Please note the above provides a search of selected fields in the Derbyshire section of the Places of Worship Database on this site (churchdb.gukutils.org.uk) only. For other counties, or for a full search of the Database, you might like to try the site's Google Custom Search, which includes full webpage content.
