We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded by 1970, and we understand it is still open.

The Michael Church is situated on the north east corner of the junction of Lowedges Road with Lupton Road. It is a modern single-storey building, with a group of five tall windows facing Lowedges Road, and a pyramidal roof, which some lighting conditions suggest may be clad with copper. There is also what appears to be a church hall attached, facing Lupton Road. There are plenty of references online indicating the hall is available for hire, as for instance by "Slimmers World" - as announced on the banner attached to the building on the day the Google StreetCar drove past. It has a circular window in the gable end facing Lowedges Road, and possibly a dedication plaque set into the brickwork, but otherwise it looks much like a modern residence.

It has not been possible to find out when the Church was built. Its first known appearance on Maps is in 1970, where it is labelled as "The Michael Church (Presb & Congl)", and in 2016 it was mentioned on the former website of South Sheffield Evangelical Church ( in connection with its foundation in 1981, so obviously the Michael Church was well established by then.

More generally, The Michael Church belongs to the Sheffield South Group of United Reformed Churches. The group also includes Meersbrook Park, and Dore & Totley Churches. For more information see the URC Yorkshire Synod website.

Now or formerly Congregational/United Reformed (URC).

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Church is located at OS grid reference SK3461480764. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Greenhill, Norton, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
