We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1965, and we understand it is still open.

St Peter's is very much a Church of the 1960s, built to a circular plan, in brick, with a solid central spire, on a square base. It was begun in 1964, and completed the following year, with the Bishop of Derby in attendance at its consecration. In 2015, according to St Peter's Church website, a special service was held on 24th May, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the occasion.

Evidently, however, a place of worship was established in Greenhill years before a permanent building was acquired. As early as 1895, as Kelly's Directory of that year records that Church services were then being held in the schoolroom, on Sundays and Wednesday evenings.

The Sheffield Archives hold registers of baptisms for the period 1958-1975, and of marriages, from 1959-1985. For more information, and a description of the church, see the British Listed Buildings website.

Note: although Greenhill has been part of the City of Sheffield since 1933 for civil purposes, it was not transferred to Sheffield Diocese until 1974. Thus it was, in 1965, the Bishop of Derby who performed the dedication ceremony.
