We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded by 1981, and we understand it is still open.

Emmanuel Church is one of a group of modern buildings situated at the end of Thorpe Drive (a cul-de-sac). It is a square building, with an unusual two-tier pyramidal roof, clad in red pantiles, and topped with a further pyramid, which appears to be of burnished steel.

Its first known appearance on Old Maps is in 1981-1982, where it is labelled as "Emmanuel Church (Multi-denominational)". Other buildings on the site at that time were shown to be a Community Hall, and two Schools - Waterthorpe First, and Emmanuel Middle.

It has affiliations with the Church of England, the Methodist Church in Sheffield, and the Yorkshire Baptist Association.

The London Gazette notices have been searched, and it does not appear to have been registered for marriages.

Waterthorpe lies within the parish of Mosborough, about half way between Mosborough and Beighton. Development of the suburb began in the mid-1970s of the area north of Mosborough, around Waterthorpe Farm, which appears to have survived at least until the mid 1990s. It was situated in the area south of Owlthorpe Greenway, between its junctions with Westfield Northway and Carley Drive.

Now or formerly Multi-denominational.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Church is located at OS grid reference SK4320582472. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Mosborough, Eckington, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
