We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded by 1897, and we understand it is still open.

Killamarsh Methodist Church is situated on the south side of Sheffield Road, a few blocks to the east of its junction with Bridge Street.

Its foundation predates the publication of Kelly's Directory of 1891, which mentions Congregational, and Primitive Methodist chapels in the parish; however it was not registered for marriages until much later, as the following notice in The London Gazette of 8th April 1952 (p.1965) indicates:

A Separate Building, duly certified for religious worship, named METHODIST CHURCH situated at Sheffield Road, Killamarsh, in Chesterfield registration district in the county of Derby was on the 28th March 1952, registered for solemnizing marriages therein, pursuant to section 41 of the Marriage Act, 1949. Dated 3rd April 1952.

Records of baptisms from 1887-1943 (with Handsworth), and 1946-1976 (as "Sheffield Road Methodist") are available at Sheffield Archives. After 1975, its congregation would have been joined by that of Kirkcroft Lane Methodist Church, which held its final service that year. Further details of the latter are available elsewhere in this database.

Now or formerly Primitive Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Church is located at OS grid reference SK4557981123. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Killamarsh, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
