This Church has (or had) a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in the 13th century, and we understand it is still open.

St Peter's Church is a Grade II Listed Building. The British Listed Buildings website provides the information that it dates from the 13th century, with a 15th century tower; but was rebuilt in 1877 by Arthur Blomfield.

Kelly's Directory of 1932 tells us that there are several 19th century tombs in the chancel, and one in a recess on the north side of the 15th century, with the effigy of a priest in full canonicals, representing Roger Doughton (Douton), a former rector, d.1500. The inscription, which even then was difficult to decipher, is said to read: "Hic jacet Rogerus Douton quondam Rector Ecclesiae parochialis de Scheyle qui quidem Rogerus obiit penultimo die Julii anno D'ni m'l'o quingentessimo cujus a'i'e propicetur De' Amen".

Note: Netherseal (Seile, Seal) was formerly in Leicestershire. It was transferred to Derbyshire in 1897. See also Overseal, which at the time of Kelly's Directory of 1932 is described as "a civil parish in the ecclesiastical parish of Seale, 1½ miles south-west from Moira station".

Now or formerly Church of England.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Church is located at OS grid reference SK2887312888. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Netherseal, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
