Cemeteries

We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1859, but we understand it was closed in 2010.

An account of Bitton Methodist Church celebrating its 150th anniversary (in 2009) was published in the August 2010 edition of Focal Point, the parish magazine of St Mary's Church, Bitton for August 2010 - "celebrating 150 years of witness and faithful commitment to God in this part of His vineyard..." It remarks that in its early days "Ebenezer Chapel" (as it was known in the deeds) would have been competing with the Wesleyan Chapel, built 25 years before, only yards away, and with St Mary's parish church itself... "the anniversary was a real boost, a real joy and delight".

Sadly, however it was to close the following year. Its last service was held on August 29th 2010, but with hopes it might become a Community Centre.

It had been registered for solemnising marriages, as the following notice in The London Gazette of 14th July 1950 (p.3643) indicates:

A Separate Building, duly certified for religious worship, named EBENEZER CHAPEL situated at Bitton in Kingswood registration district in the county of Gloucester was on the 30th June 1950, registered for solemnizing marriages therein, pursuant to Sec. 41 of the Marriage Act, 1949. Dated 8th July 1950.

The formal notice of cancellation for "Ebenezer Chapel, Bitton", was published on 1st May 2014, (p.8766).

Denomination

Now or formerly Free Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
