Cemeteries

We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1824, and we understand it is still open.

According to the Religious Census of 1851 (HO 129/340/2/9/16), there was only one non-conformist place of worship in South Cerney. It was described as an "Independent Chapel", and said to be "Private", with the religious denomination of "Primitive Methodist Connexion". It was founded in 1815, and provided 30 free sittings, 30 "Other" sittings, and standing room for 20. The estimated number of worshippers to Divine Service on March 30, 1851 were 40 in the afternoon, and 20 Sunday Scholars; and 90 in the evening, when there were no Sunday Scholars. The return was completed by William Ricketts, a Steward.

This is somewhat confusing, since later sources indicate South Cerney had both an "Independent" (or Congregationalist) Chapel founded in 1824, which Kelly's Directory of 1923 says had 150 sittings; and a Primitive Methodist Chapel.

Old Maps confirm that there were two. The one at this location is marked on OS Maps of 1875-1884 as "Independent", and on later Maps as "Congregational". In the present day, it is known as "South Cerney United Church", indicating it probably became part of the United Reformed Church in 1973. Evidently at a later date it welcomed Methodists to its congregation, as it also belongs to the Gloucestershire Methodist Circuit, so it would appear we've come full circle.

Now or formerly Independent/Congregational.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
