We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded by 1965, and we understand it is still open.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints website records these premises in Downhill Road as one of its Meeting Houses. It is cleverly hidden from the road, but from above, it can be seen as a long rectangular building facing towards the road, with a slender tower (or steeple) at its north-west corner.

The following notice in The London Gazette of 4th May 1965 (p.4381) indicates its registration for marriages:

A Building certified for worship named LATTER DAY SAINT CHAPEL, Downend Road, Downend, Mangotsfield in the registration district of Kingswood in the county of Gloucester, was on 27th April 1965 registered for solemnising marriages therein pursuant to section 41 of the Marriage Act, 1949 as amended by section 1(1) of the Marriage Acts Amendment Act, 1958. Dated 29th April 1965.

Other LDS Meeting Houses in Bristol are at 721 Wells Road (BS14 9HU), and Wigton Crescent (BS10 6DY). The Wells Road premises is the only one of the three which is also a Family History Centre.

Old Maps show the property as "Overnhill House", but more recently (1998-1992) it is labelled as "PW" (ie Place of Worship), and the property known as Overnhill House is elsewhere, listed in directories at 34-36 Overnhill Road, BS16 5DP, as a Care Home - confusing, huh?

Note: there are two Downend Roads in Bristol. The other is closer to the centre, BS15.

Now or formerly Latter-day Saints.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Church is located at OS grid reference ST6464876449. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Downend, Mangotsfield, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
