Cemeteries

We believe the Chapel did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1862, but we understand it was closed in 1989.

This place of worship was first noted on Old Maps of 1882, labelled as "Salem Chapel (United Free Methodist)". It was situated on the south-west corner of the junction of Soundwell Road with Leicester Square, and is shown originally as a long rectangular building, with a path leading to it from Soundwell Road. By 1903, it has an extension to the south, giving it an 'L' shaped plan.

According to an account of the Kingswood Whit Walk, in a book Religion in English Everyday Life: An Ethnographic Approach (Timothy Jenkins, 1999), it was built in 1862. Its last known appearance on Old Maps is 1988-1992 (marked as 'PW'); its closure being recorded by the following notice in The London Gazette of 1st November 1989 (p.12576):

The Registrar General, being satisfied that Salem Soundwell, Mangotsfield in the registration district of Bristol in the Non-Metropolitan County of Avon is no longer used as a place of worship by the congregation on whose behalf it was on 5th October 1927 registered for marriages in accordance with the Marriage Act 1836, has cancelled the registration. Dated 12th October 1989.

It has since been demolished, and in the present day, a block of flats ("Church Court") now occupies the site.

Bristol Record Office Handlist includes it as "Soundwell: Salem (UM)", with registers of baptisms 1922-1989, and marriages 1957-1978 and 1984-1989.

Denomination

Now or formerly Free/United Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
