We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.
Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded before 1902, but we understand it was closed after 1952.

St Werburgh's Mission Room is recorded in Kelly's Directory of Bristol of 1902 on the east side of Mina Road, in between its junctions with Penfield Street and Treefield Road (now renamed as Mercia Drive). By 1914 a Sunday School is included in the description - "St Werburgh's Sunday School & Mission Room" - situated between the residence of Chas. Paradise, living at St Werburgh's cottage (after #126, the residence of Henry Sweet) and #134, Mrs Lilly Evans, a grocer. The building is shown on Old Maps from 1903, and as late as 1951-52.
An article "25 years today since St Werburgh's Church closed its doors" (13th November 2013) in the "News" section of St Werburgh's Community Website explains how parishioners had tried to raise enough money to build a church hall, "but didn't reach the required figure so had to make do with a tin mission hall down the road" - adding that it was demolished in the early 1970s.

Search Tips:

You can specify either a Place, or OS Grid Reference to search for. When you specify a Place, only entries for that place will be returned, with Places of Worship listed in alphabetical order.
