We believe the Chapel does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1976, and we understand it is still open.

Cotham Parish Church was built originally in 1842-3 as Highbury Chapel, for an Independent, later Congregationalist congregation. It was closed in 1972, but was purchased by the Church of England as a replacement for St Mary the Virgin's Church in Tyndall's Park, which closed in 1976. It was united with St Saviour's in Woolcott Park when it closed in 1978, and with St Nathanael's, in Elmgrove Road, when it closed in 1988.

It has the joint dedication of "St Mary with St Saviour", but is more commonly called "Cotham Parish Church".

Cotham Parish Church website has details of Memorials inside the Church. These include a War Memorial, two "Martyrs" Memorials, erected by the founders, and a memorial to Henry Arnold Thomas, pastor of Highbury Church for 47 years, carved by Eric Gill. The chapel was built near the spot where five protestant martyrs ('five poor men of Bristol') were burnt to death as heretics in the reign of Queen Mary.

Now or formerly Church of England.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Chapel is located at OS grid reference ST5822573859. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Cotham, Bristol, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
