Cemeteries

This Church has (or had) a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in the 13th century, and we understand it is still open.

Kelly's Directory of 1923 describes St Peter's Church as "a small building of stone in the Norman and later styles, consisting of chancel, nave of two bays, north aisle, south porch, and an embattled western tower containing one bell. The two arches separating the nave and north aisles are Norman. The chancel with its eight lancet windows is Early English, and contains a memorial window to the Rev. R. Wilbraham Ford, a former rector, placed there in 1862 by his children. It also retains a piscina and aumbry and a low-side window. The staircase to the rood loft also remains. The remaining windows are Decorated, and the porch and font Perpendicular".

There were two restorations, one in 1850 at the cost of John Bennett esq., its rector at that time, and again in 1883, under the direction of architect Mr. Bassett Smith, of London.

The British Listed Buildings website mentions a monument to Maria, wife of Robert Glyn (d.1682), on the north wall of the chancel; a 19th century monument to Robert le Marchant, former rector, who died in 1915; and a 20th century RAF memorial window, at the west end of the nave.

Please choose a County by selecting one of the Tabs below.
Note: you MUST choose a County - searching all four at once is not an option!

You can specify either a Place, or OS Grid Reference to search for. When you specify a Place, only entries for that place will be returned, with Places of Worship listed in alphabetical order. If you specify a Grid Reference, Places of Worship in the immediate vicinity will be listed, in order of distance from the Grid Reference supplied. The default is to list 10, but you can specify How Many you want to see, up to a maximum of 100.

You can further refine your search by supplying other search terms.

Please note the above provides a search of selected fields in the Gloucestershire section of the Places of Worship Database on this site (churchdb.gukutils.org.uk) only. For other counties, or for a full search of the Database, you might like to try the site's Google Custom Search, which includes full webpage content.
