This Chapel had a graveyard.
Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1655, but we understand it was closed in 1876.

This former meeting house was replaced in 1876 by the building which is today's Bourton on the Water Baptist Church. It was built in 1701 for a congregation in existence by 1655, but has now been demolished. The surrounding burial ground survives, and is situated next to Bourton on the Water Cemetery. It is enclosed by a stone wall, and is approached through its own separate entrance.
The above information was compiled with the assistance of the booklet Non-Conformist Chapels and Meeting Houses, Gloucestershire (1986, pp.61-2), where there is a list of some of the memorials, quoted from a publication The Strict Baptist Chapels of England Vol 5 (1952-68, pp.114-15). There is more information on the growth of the Baptist congregations in Bourton on the website of today's Bourton-on-the-Water Baptist Church, including information about "a promising lad", Benjamin Beddome, who became a much loved pastor and preacher, but also acquired a reputation as a hymn writer. The "handsome double-fronted" manse that his congregation built for him was sold by the church in 1938, and survives now as the Old Manse Hotel.

Search Tips:

You can specify either a Place, or OS Grid Reference to search for. When you specify a Place, only entries for that place will be returned, with Places of Worship listed in alphabetical order. If you specify a Grid Reference, Places of Worship in the immediate vicinity will be listed, in order of distance from the Grid Reference supplied. The default is to list 10, but you can specify How Many you want to see, up to a maximum of 100.

You can restrict the search to classes of Denomination. The exact denomination is always shown in the results, although the search is for broad types. Thus you can search for 'Methodist', but not 'Wesleyan Methodist' or 'Primitive Methodist'. 'Multi-denominational' includes Ecumenical Partnerships, and 'Miscellaneous' means anything not covered by other broad classes.
