Cemeteries

We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1903, and we understand it is still open.

Strangely, although Matlock Moor Primitive Methodist Chapel was founded before the publication of Kelly's Directories of 1912, and 1932, they make no mention of it. The following notice in The London Gazette of 1st April 1949 (p.1665) does, however, record its registration for marriages:

A Separate Building, duly certified for religious worship, named METHODIST CHURCH, situated at Matlock Moor, Matlock in Bakewell registration district in the county of Derby was on the 24th March, 1949, registered for solemnising marriages therein, pursuant to 6 & 7 Will. IV., c.85. Dated 28th March 1949.

The following information about the Church has been provided to accompany the photographs on the right. A list of people who have supplied the information is included in the Acknowledgements, below.

[Image 1] This is a Primitive Methodist Church, founded 1903 and situated on the corner of Chesterfield Road and Quarry Lane, Matlock Moor. There is no graveyard, but the Church is apparently still in use.

The Inscription reads:.

To The Glory of God
This stone was laid by
Geo. G. BLACKWELL
Merchant of Liverpool
April 13th 1903

There is more information about Matlock Moor Methodist Church, and other churches in the Matlock area, on Ann Andrews' web page of Matlock's Churches and Chapels.[1]

Denomination

Now or formerly Primitive Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
