This Church has (or had) a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1818, and we understand it is still open.

This place of worship is labelled on Google Maps, but there's no access from Street View, so I can't describe its appearance.

The following information about the Church has been provided to accompany the photographs on the right. A list of people who have supplied the information is included in the Acknowledgements, below.

[Image 1] The Baptist Chapel building dates from 1818, but there has been a Baptist ministry in Wotton under Edge since 1717, and, it has been said on the town's Official Website[1] that it “reflects the architectural characteristics of the previous century”.

It is a rectangular block with two stories, and side wings containing stairs to the upper level. Inside there is a gallery on three sides, supported on five cast iron columns, and a balcony with “front classical panels, painted”.

The graveyard on the right side and the graves at the front are surrouded by spear-head iron railings

Now or formerly Baptist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Church is located at OS grid reference ST7565293195. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:
