Cemeteries

We believe the Chapel did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1845, though it is now closed, but we don't yet know when.

Non-Conformist Chapels and Meeting Houses, Derbyshire (1986) describes this Chapel as dated 1845, of rendered brick and slate, and an open pediment at the front. From Google StreetView it can be seen to have a central doorway, and what may have been a date plaque set into the pediment, and sides of three bays, with rectangular windows - now boarded up. Obviously, it has now closed, and appears to be in use as storage space.

The return to the Religious Census of 1851 (HO 129/414/2/7/15) for the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Smisby is for a separate building used exclusively as a place of worship, which had seating for 80. The estimated congregation on the evening of March 30th was 50. There were no morning, or afternoon services, nor Sunday School. The return was completed by John Hague, Minister, who lived at Ashby de La Zouch, Leicestershire.

Denomination

Now or formerly Wesleyan Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
