Cemeteries

We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1910, and we understand it is still open.

Woodseats Baptist Church is a large, and rather grim looking building. It is recorded in Kelly's Directory of Derbyshire of 1912 as built in 1910, with the address given as "Chesterfield road". Its minister was the Rev. Levi Hughes, and services were held Sundays 10.45am and 6.30pm; and Wednesdays at 8pm.

Tadcaster Road runs parallel and to the west of Chesterfield Road, and possibly at the time Kelly's Directory was published it did not exist, so the only address possible was "Chesterfield Road". In fact, Google Satellite View suggests that the land between the rear of the Church and Chesterfield Road also belongs to the Church - part of it being a garden, and the remainder a playground. Incidentally, the street "Tadcaster Way", bordering it to the south, is labelled on early Maps, and as late as 1970 as "Firbeck Road".

Denomination

Now or formerly Baptist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

Please choose a County by selecting one of the Tabs below.
Note: you MUST choose a County - searching all four at once is not an option!

You can further refine your search by supplying other search terms.

Please note the above provides a search of selected fields in the Derbyshire section of the Places of Worship Database on this site (churchdb.gukutils.org.uk) only. For other counties, or for a full search of the Database, you might like to try the site's Google Custom Search, which includes full webpage content.
