Cemeteries

We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1892, and we understand it is still open.

Kelly's Directory of 1912 records that a Congregational chapel was erected at Meersbrook in 1892, and that it had 600 sittings. The Rev. Walter LENWOOD, B.A. LL.B. was its pastor, and services were held at 10.30am and 6.30pm, and also Wednesday at 8pm.

It was registered for marriages the year after it was opened, as the following notice in The London Gazette of 10th January 1893 (p.145) indicates:

NOTICE is hereby given, that a separate building, named Congregational Church, situate at Meersbrook Park, Chesterfield-road, in the parish of Norton, in the county of Derby, in the district of Ecclesall Bierlow, being a building certified according to law as a place of religious worship, was, on the 4th day of January, 1893, duly registered for solemnizing marriages therein, pursuant to the Act of 6th and 7th Wm. 4, cap. 85. Dated 4th January 1893.

In the present day, Meersbrook Park is part of the Sheffield South Group of United Reformed Churches. The group includes Meersbrook Park, Dore & Totley and The Michael Church. For more information see the URC Yorkshire Synod website. The present building is a replacement of the original Congregational Church.

Denomination

Now or formerly Congregational/United Reformed (URC).

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

Please choose a County by selecting one of the Tabs below.
Note: you MUST choose a County - searching all four at once is not an option!

You can further refine your search by supplying other search terms.

Please note the above provides a search of selected fields in the Derbyshire section of the Places of Worship Database on this site (churchdb.gukutils.org.uk) only. For other counties, or for a full search of the Database, you might like to try the site's Google Custom Search, which includes full webpage content.
