Cemeteries

We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded before 1912, but we understand it was closed after 1973.

The first indication, as far as I'm aware, of a place of worship in this location is in Kelly's Directory of Derbyshire of 1912, which states there was a Mission room in connection with St Paul's Church in Norton Lees. There is none shown on Old Maps of that date, but Maps of 1923 show a Parish Hall, on the south west corner of the junction of Norton Lees Road with Crawford Road. This was, I assume, connected to St Paul's, being the nearest Church, and therefore may well have been a replacement, or conversion of the Mission room.

Its last known appearance on Old Maps dates to the 1963-1973 series; but clearly since then, the site has been sold, and redeveloped, as today (2016), it is occupied by modern housing.

Denomination

Now or formerly Church of England.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

You can further refine your search by supplying other search terms.

Please note the above provides a search of selected fields in the Derbyshire section of the Places of Worship Database on this site (churchdb.gukutils.org.uk) only. For other counties, or for a full search of the Database, you might like to try the site's Google Custom Search, which includes full webpage content.
