Cemeteries

We believe the Chapel did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1765, but we understand it was closed in 1805.

This chapel is recorded in Non-Conformist Chapels and Meeting Houses, Derbyshire (1986) at an approximate location indicated by the grid reference. It was John Wesley's first meeting house in Derby, when in 1765 "M Lewen took me in a post-chaise to Derby where the new house was thoroughly filled". It was in use until 1805 after which services were transferred to the first of two chapels in King Street. The second was a reconstruction of the first in 1841, though this too was demolished, about 1968.

The original building lasted slightly longer. After it was no longer used as a meeting house, it became a malthouse, and was later in use as commercial premises, until it too was demolished, on 17 Jan 1973.

A new-looking red brick building, on the corner of St Michael's Lane and Queen Street shows some similarities to the photograph of the building shown in the before-mentioned source.

Denomination

Now or formerly Wesleyan Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
